From the Rector

Dear Friends,

This is the "Summer Messenger" which means that is the last one you will receive until September. This also means that our program year is coming to an end. Every June I look back over the last ten months in amazement. The collection of monthly "Messengers" tells the story of the year just past. As I flip through the pages, there is one response that arises: the response of gratitude to God for the gift of such a year.

It has been said before on this page, and I cannot help but wonder: do we realize, do we ever really realize the gift of this congregation to us? Look through the new directory - at all the names of all who have joined our membership - and remember that many congregations struggle to show a lessened decline each year. As I flip through the past year's newsletters, I remember the incredible lives of those who have died, but not before they gave much of themselves to the work of this church. I also see articles on activities that have helped us to keep on top of social issues, to educate us about the substance of the Christian faith, to welcome those who are strangers in our midst. Consider the members of the parish council whose labors of love have strengthened us. Rejoice at the list of vestry members who have led us this far. I am overwhelmed at the children in our congregation who have crowded into our church. I am excited by the strains of choirs singing, our organ resounding.

Do we ever really realize what an INCREDIBLE, LIVELY, REMARKABLE gift this church is to each and every one of us? I give thanks to God for the gifts of such a year.

Church School:

June 12th was the last day of classes for this school year. Many thanks to the teachers who worked so hard this year: Sharon and Carrie Trant, Laura Davis, Linda Emaelaf, Carolina Lucchini, Robin Kaczka, Allison de Kanel, Peter Nelson, George Woodzell, Susan Townsend, Dave Crates and Tim Olsen. Thanks also to Stacy DeBritz, Karen Smith and Vicki Hoshko for special help during the year, and to all the parents.

We have had a special year from the Saint’s party to "dia y noche". The highlight for most of us was the making of the "Putz". If you did not have a chance to participate in this special activity, look forward to next year when we do it again. Other things to look back on: learning the seasons of the Church year, making footprints, "superheros" and saints. The children participated in the own Foot Washing and Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. The 5th and 6th graders created a very special place in the tower and the preK-K learned a little sign language. As our children keep growing, we hope they also grow closer to God by learning and sharing and working together.

Plans are underway for summer Bible school and church school 2005-06. Please consider this ministry to our children. If you have suggestions or wish to help, please call Richey Woodzell or Laura Davis. A sign-up sheet and registration forms will be in the parish hall. The week of Bible school is August 15-19 at Union Presbyterian Church. There will be two sessions. One session is during the day with lunch provided and the other is planned for the evening. Hope you can come!

Home Furnishings Program (HFP) – We need moving crews!

The Home Furnishings Program is an independent organization begun by Church Women United and funded by churches and individuals in the area. It donates basic household furnishings in good repair to people in Schenectady on the basis of referrals from churches and social agencies. It accomplishes this partly with volunteer crews from area churches who drive the HFP truck for scheduled pickups and deliveries.

St. Stephen’s turn to "man the van" this year is coming in July, so please set aside an evening now to help. Anyone aged 16 or older, who can help to carry furniture, is more than welcome. If you would like to help please call me. And find a friend or two to be part of your crew! Dates for the runs will be posted soon. Look for a sign-up sheet in the parish hall.

If you would like to help the HFP in another way, you may donate items, either by placing them in the basket in the parish hall, or by calling the program administrator at 346-2444 and arranging for pickup. Or you may make a monetary contribution and send it to Home Furnishings Program, 603 State Street, Sch’dy NY 12305.

Episcopal Relief and Development News

Thank you!! To all members of St. Stephen's for your generous gifts to Episcopal Relief. I have been asked to thank everyone who supports this ministry to the whole church for the whole world. Your concern and generosity to the many sufferers of tsunami, earthquakes, hurricanes, famine, HIV, and HIV orphans, poverty, and much more is greatly appreciated and enables Episcopal Relief to respond to many of these disasters through their bishops and sometimes with other churches. Heartfelt thanks to you all.

Kabby Lowe,

Coordinator for Albany Diocese

St. Stephen’s to Serve Lunches – Help Needed!

As part of the SICM Summer Lunch program for children in Schenectady, St. Stephen’s will be serving bag lunches at Jerry Burrell Park on Hamilton Street, July 5 – 8 and August 8-12. We need at least 4 volunteers each day to set up, serve and clean up, and to have fun with the kids in the park. The time commitment is about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. We will post the exact hours in mid-June. Please sign up in the parish hall, or call Richey Woodzell, 372-9398.

Home Communion

If you or someone you know is unable to attend church on either a long, or short-term basis, please call the parish office if you would like to have communion brought to you.
